Two OTDI Team Members Honored with Ohio State’s 2025 Distinguished Staff Award

The Office of Technology and Digital Innovation (OTDI) is proud to celebrate two of our own - Richard Henricksen and Susan Hatfield - as recipients of The Ohio State University’s 2025 Distinguished Staff Award. This prestigious recognition is the highest honor bestowed upon university staff, celebrating excellence, service, leadership, and embodiment of Ohio State’s Shared Values.

Together, Richard and Susan represent the best of OTDI: dedicated, compassionate, innovative, and committed to empowering the university community through their work.
 

Richard Henricksen: Elevating Learning Through Technology

Widely recognized as a subject matter expert in Carmen (Canvas) and PebblePad, Richard’s efforts touch nearly every corner of the university - from the GE Bookends program and the Honors and Scholars Center to countless faculty and staff seeking guidance in educational technology.

A former instructor with a Ph.D. in Spanish and Portuguese, Richard blends deep pedagogical insight with technical expertise. He was the first person in the world to earn full certification through PebblePad’s Capability Framework and is known internationally for his leadership in ePortfolio adoption and innovation.

“Richard helps us all be better teachers, better learners, and better colleagues,” wrote the GE Bookends team in their letter of support. “His work strengthens the foundation of this university.”

Whether he’s developing university-wide instructional guides, training hundreds of instructors, or providing thoughtful feedback to software developers, Richard approaches each task with patience, clarity, and care. He embodies Ohio State’s Shared Values - particularly Excellence and Impact, Inclusion and Equity, and Care and Compassion.

Susan Hatfield, Executive Assistant in OTDI, has supported nine Chief Information Officers over nearly three decades, providing steady leadership and fostering a culture of kindness, trust, and professionalism across the university.

Known for her warmth and incredible work ethic, Susan is the behind-the-scenes force that keeps operations running smoothly. She routinely manages large-scale events, including Big Ten gatherings and university-wide staff functions, all while balancing competing priorities and staying on top of budgets, approvals, and logistics.

“Susan doesn’t seek the spotlight - but her work speaks volumes,” said Marty Winders, Director of Endpoint Engineering. “She is always ready to listen, encourage, and lend a helping hand. She’s the heart of our team.”

Despite facing significant personal challenges, including caring for a loved one with stage 4 cancer, Susan has remained a pillar of strength and positivity for her colleagues. Her unwavering dedication and ability to support others while navigating hardship is both humbling and inspiring.

“She continues to bring positivity and a smile every day,” said nominator Susan Hurst. “Her presence lifts everyone she works with.”

Richard and Susan’s achievements showcase the extraordinary talent and commitment within OTDI. They exemplify the university’s Shared Values in action - making Ohio State not only a place of innovation but also of compassion and connection.

“Susan and Richard embody what it means to be a Buckeye by serving others and supporting the important work taking place on campus every day,” said Chris Kabourek, Senior Vice President of Administration and Planning. “This honor, and their recognition, reflects how OTDI is integrated into the fabric our daily work and I am proud of their accomplishments.”

They will be honored alongside other recipients at the university’s annual Distinguished Staff Awards luncheon, where each will receive a $1,500 award and commemorative plaque.
