Privacy@Ohio State Updates

As part of its ongoing mission to grow and strengthen The Ohio State University’s privacy program, Privacy@Ohio State partners with students, faculty and staff on a variety of initiatives. Over the past semester, the team, part of Digital Security and Trust within the Office of Technology and Digital Innovation, has implemented a number of transparent practices and tools to support the university’s mission while balancing individual privacy.

Student Analytics Principles

In an increasingly digital world, student analytics help Ohio State understand and optimize student success and experiences. Recently, the privacy team has created and adopted Student Analytics Principles. These principles guide the university’s collection, analysis and reporting of student analytics to ensure the data is handled and used appropriately.

Texting on Behalf of Ohio State

Faculty and staff can now send out text message campaigns on behalf of the university. Those interested in utilizing this communication method should review Ohio State’s SMS Texting Standards prior to submitting a proposal.

International Privacy Laws

Now more than ever, international privacy laws and regulations are being enacted and changed at a fast pace. The International Privacy Laws subcommittee is working on tackling the university’s compliance needs within this ever-changing landscape. University members who have questions or need help regarding these laws can reach out to the privacy team for assistance.

Youth and Privacy

Summer is here! Units involved in youth programming are reminded to review the university’s Youth Privacy Principles and the Youth Activities and Programs policy to ensure those participating have the best experience possible.

Reporting Privacy or Security Incidents and Concerns

University community members who suspect they have come across a security or privacy incident are encouraged to notify the team at security@osu.edu. A full list of resources and multiple ways to report privacy concerns can be found on the Privacy@Ohio State website.

The team's work could not be done without the help of the faculty and staff who serve on working groups and as Privacy Pros. Their ongoing commitment and assistance is vital in the development of new initiatives.
