Individual U: Drive Accounts Moving to OneDrive in 2022
Over the last year, we’ve continued to implement our Microsoft 365 Roadmap through the retirement of BuckeyeBox to provide all faculty, students and staff with tools and resources to effectively communicate and collaborate in a mobile and secure way. Our next step in this important journey to streamline our cloud storage solutions will include the retirement of the individual U: drive for Managed IT Services partners.
About the Project
The Office of the Chief Information Officer is retiring individual U: drives and using a tool to migrate user data to OneDrive for Business. Users will store files in OneDrive for Business moving forward. We will work with departmental leaders to determine the best time for departments to migrate. In advance of migration, users impacted will receive communications with dates and resources specific to the migration.
Timeline
No new U: Drive creation: Friday, October 29
U: drives will not be created for new employees onboarding beginning Friday, October 29. New employees should use OneDrive for individual file storage and technicians deploying their devices will go over access to OneDrive with new employees. For more information on where to store files visit the MITS file storage page.
Retire Empty U: Drives: Tuesday, November 30
Empty U: drives will be retired and inaccessible beginning Tuesday, November, 30. This means U: drives that are currently empty (employees don’t have any stored files) will be removed from devices.
Migrate U: drives: TBD
The exact dates of migration for individuals that have files in their U: drive have not yet been determined. We will announce these dates once they are set. We will be contacting departments to schedule time to migrate individual U: drives and all the files contained in them to OneDrive. OneDrive for Business has a limit of 5TB of data so we will work with the limited use cases that have this amount of data or more in their U: drives on a case-by-case basis.
Your Role
Clean up U: drive files
We encourage users to open their U: drives and evaluate the contents. You can delete anything you no longer need and do not want to be moved to OneDrive. We do not recommend self-migrating and moving your own files. Because OCIO has amassed resources specifically for this project, we have more "horsepower" to bring to the process.
Learn OneDrive for Business
All of our file storage and collaboration tools are part of Microsoft 365. The best way to learn the tools is to use them, then refer to online resources as you have questions about how to complete a specific action to achieve the desired result.
- View Microsoft’s OneDrive Quickstart Guide to see features in a diagram that shows where to access each function.
- Visit the ARC's OneDrive for Business service page (login required) for job aids that explain how to manage and share files along with video demos, available training, frequently asked questions, troubleshooting and more.
- Don’t forget about data security. Please review the types of data that Ohio State has approved to be saved in OneDrive.
