Pronoun Feature Now Available in CarmenZoom

CarmenZoom users, rejoice! You can now add pronouns to your display name and make them visible across all your meetings, if desired. Students, instructors and staff have been asking for a consistent way to share pronouns, and Zoom added the feature in their latest release.

"In our virtual world, building relationships and connecting with one another can be difficult enough," said Nicholas Messenger, Council of Graduate Students president. "This change will let both instructors and students use each other’s pronouns organically and much more effortlessly, which is a big step toward creating more inclusive spaces in Ohio State’s classrooms."

To set up your pronouns, log in at carmenzoom.osu.edu and navigate to your profile. Select the Edit button near your name and enter your pronouns in the appropriate field. You can also select when to display your pronouns (always, never, ask when joining a meeting, etc.). Pronouns will appear next to your display name during a Zoom meeting if you choose to show them. Pronouns are currently not displayed for webinar participants.

In order to use this feature, you must be using Zoom version 5.7.0 or newer, and you must be logged in to your CarmenZoom account. Even if your day’s meetings don’t require authentication, you should always log in to get the best CarmenZoom experience and to ensure your preferences and settings are utilized during meetings.

CarmenCanvas already includes a pronoun option within the Account Settings menu that allows you to choose from a variety of inclusive options. Anyone who takes advantage of this feature will see their selected pronouns alongside their name throughout Canvas in places like People and Discussions. For even more personalization, instructors can enable NameCoach within their courses to allow students to record the correct pronunciation of their name.

Having tools like NameCoach and Zoom that allow for name pronunciation and pronoun identification options allows our community to be heard and strengthens their sense of belonging,” said Interim Associate Vice President of Learning Technology Cory Tressler. “Their voice, thoughts and feelings are being expressed via the name and pronouns that they connect with as they engage in their work, research and academic studies.”
