University-Configured Amazon Web Services
We are excited to share that, beginning this fall, The Ohio State University will begin delivering university-configured Amazon Web Services (AWS). AWS provides secure, scalable cost-effective computing, storage and database resources in support of the university’s research, analytic and administrative goals. The OSU-configured AWS service will provide a number of benefits to faculty and staff, most notably:
- On demand delivery of computing power, databases, storage, applications and other IT resources.
- Access to secure, reliable, flexible, and scalable resources that enhance cloud computing, web hosting and data storage.
- Alignment with university security and purchasing policies, and safeguards for intellectual property.
- Integration with university systems (e.g. name.n authentication, erequest).
We anticipate that OSU-configured AWS services will available in late fall of 2018. Over the next several months, we will be aligning account management and billing with university processes and developing training and resources for users, including information security best practices to help users manage security of their AWS environment. We also will be working to transfer existing consumer faculty and staff AWS accounts to the university account.
Although you can do a lot with Amazon Web Services, please be aware that at this time you cannot store or use Personal Health Information (PHI) with AWS services. We plan to pursue this in the future.
Additional information about this exciting new service will be shared as it becomes available. In the interim, if you are not yet familiar with AWS, visit our landing page and watch this introductory video to learn more.
If you have questions about the AWS roll out, please contact Deputy CIO Diane Dagefoerde or Senior Director of Service Management Tracey Richardson.
