Professor Karen Winstead's textbook for English 2201 appears highly unusual to those familiar with typical texts surrounding British Literature to 1800. The chosen texts, authored by diverse writers from a time period that valued predominantly white voices, resulted in an inclusive, guided resource for her students. By devoting the ALX grant funding entirely towards student salaries, Professor Winstead utilized the unique insight of both her undergraduate and graduate students throughout the entirety of the editing process. The result was a free, guided textbook with only the most relevant and engaging annotations and study materials.

The latest cohort of Affordable Learning Exchange (ALX) grant winners has been selected and will begin their affordability projects this spring. This group of 32 individuals will complete projects for 35 different courses across all Ohio State campuses, and are expected to save students over $300,000!
Dr. Jacquelyn Meshelemiah is passionate about fighting human trafficking. She wanted her students to be passionate too. However, when there are additional costs to a course (like expensive textbooks), some students are unable to take a class— even when the subject is something they really care about. Dr. Meshelemiah is combatting this with her newly redesigned course.
When course concepts are constantly changing, a traditional textbook becomes outdated quickly. That’s why Assistant Professor Brian Partido decided that an electronic book, or e-book, would be the right course material for his students.

This project not only saves students money--it allows the instructors to make the course material more valuable and flexible, further benefitting the students.
